While at the Springwood Diner with his girlfriend, Kris Fowles (Katie Cassidy), Dean Russell (Kellan Lutz) falls asleep at the table and meets a man covered in burn scars, wearing a red and green sweater and a clawed glove on his hand. The burned man cuts Dean's throat in the dream, but in reality it appears that Dean is cutting his own throat as friend and waitress Nancy Holbrook (Rooney Mara) looks on with Kris. At Dean's funeral, Kris sees a photograph of her and Dean as children, but cannot recall ever knowing Dean before high school. Kris begins to dream about the burned man herself and refuses to go to sleep for fear that she will die in her dreams. Jesse Braun (Thomas Dekker), Kris's ex-boyfriend, shows up at her house to keep her company while she sleeps, but Kris meets the burned man in her dreams and is murdered. Covered in blood, Jesse runs to Nancy's house to try to explain what happened and he learns that Nancy has been having dreams about the same man; that man's name is Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley).
Jesse is apprehended by the police under suspicion of murdering Kris, and is killed by Freddy when he falls asleep in his jail cell. With her friends dying, Nancy begins to question what everyone's connection is to each other, given that none of them can remember each other before their teenage years. Eventually, Nancy and her friend Quentin Smith (Kyle Gallner) discover that all of them, including more children, attended the same preschool together. Nancy's mother, Gwen (Connie Britton), reluctantly tells Nancy and Quentin that there was a gardener at the preschool, Fred Krueger, who hurt Nancy and the rest of the kids. Gwen explains that Nancy was his favorite, and came home one day telling her mom about Freddy's "magic cave" and the things that happened down there. Gwen claims Krueger skipped town before he was arrested. Nancy does not believe her and attempts to track down the remaining kids from the school. Nancy eventually discovers that all of the other kids have been killed, most of them in their sleep. Meanwhile, Quentin tries to accept that his nightmares are nothing more than repressed memories, but he falls asleep during swim practice and witnesses what really happened to Krueger. Quentin sees everyone's parents hunt down Krueger, and then burn him alive. Quentin and Nancy confront Quentin's father, Alan Smith (Clancy Brown), about the reality that they murdered Krueger with no evidence that he had committed any crime. Thus, Nancy and Quentin believe that Freddy wants revenge on them for lying as children. Nancy and Quentin, who both begin sporadically dreaming while they are awake as a result of insomnia, decide to go to the preschool and learn what they can about Krueger.
On the way, Nancy falls asleep and is attacked by Freddy, but when Quentin wakes her up they discover she has pulled a piece of Freddy's sweater out of the dreamworld and into reality. Quentin takes Nancy to the hospital for cuts on her arm; there, he steals some adrenaline and a syringe to help them stay awake. Nancy and Quentin leave the hospital and eventually make it to the preschool. Quentin uncovers Krueger's "magic cave" and the evidence that proves Krueger was physically and sexually abusing all of the children. They realize that Freddy actually wants revenge on them for telling the truth. Nancy decides the only way to end this is to pull Krueger out of their dreams and kill him in reality. Quentin tries to stay awake long enough to pull Nancy out of her dream when she has Freddy, but he falls asleep and is attacked. Krueger then goes after Nancy, and explains that he intentionally left her for last so she would stay awake long enough that when she finally fell asleep, she would no longer be able to wake back up. While Nancy struggles with Freddy, Quentin wakes and uses the adrenaline to wake up Nancy who pulls Freddy into reality. With Krueger distracted by Quentin, Nancy uses a broken paper cutter blade to cut Freddy's gloved hand off, and then slice his throat. Afterward, Nancy torches the secret room, with Krueger's body left inside, while she and Quentin leave. Nancy and her mother return home from the hospital, with Nancy being told she should get some sleep. Krueger suddenly appears in a mirror's reflection and kills Nancy's mother before pulling her body through the mirror while Nancy screams.

The film revolves around a school teacher, Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci), who seems very unhappy with her life. She has a selfish, unloving mother, Beatrice (Celia Weston), and a boyfriend, Paul Coleman (Justin Long), who can't seem to figure her out. One night, Anna goes to meet Paul for dinner not realizing he is going to propose to her and ask her to move to Chicago with him for a job promotion. Before Paul could propose to her and ask her to come, she freaks out thinking he's breaking up with her. After an argument in the restaurant, Anna storms out of the restaurant and drives off as Paul tries to tell her he wants her to come. Anna gets into an accident while trying to use her cell phone and drive in the rain.Anna wakes up dazed, confused, and numb. She finds the morgue director, Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson), cleaning her wound and telling her she's dead. Paul, stricken with grief and heart ache finds it hard to accept Anna's death. Anna attempts to escape a few times but is un-successful. During one attempt to escape, she finds a room with a phone and calls Paul. Paul is not able to hear her properly and hangs up thinking it's a prank. Anna finally accepts she's dead when Eliot allows her to look at herself in the mirror, to find she looks like a corpse. She slowly and slowly starts to feel weak and starts to give in to her fears.
During the final preparation for the funeral, she asks Eliot if she can see herself one last time in the mirror. Eliot holds a small mirror and while she stares at herself, Anna takes a deep breathe and notices her breath condense on mirror. She realizes that Eliot has been lying to her and she is not actually dead, but has been injected with chemicals to make her numb and give her the appearance of a corpse. It is discovered that Eliot takes people who he believes are not physically dead, but "have no life left inside them" and prepares them for an actual death, until they eventually die.
After the funeral, Paul drinks heavily and tells Eliot he knew Anna wasn't dead. We then see Anna waking up and realizing she is being buried. She tries to cry out and open the coffin, but she is too late. As she slowly dies due to lack of oxygen in the coffin, Eliot tells Paul to go to the cemetery and find out whether Anna is actually dead or not before it's too late. Paul rushes to the cemetery and digs up Anna's grave to find her alive, as they embrace and Anna tells him "she has always loved him". Paul then sees a flash of bright light and wakes up in the morgue with Eliot cleaning him up. He says he saw Anna and Eliot tells him he never made it to the cemetery due to a car accident that killed him.
The movie ends with a screen of black and Paul's voice saying "I'm not dead!".

In an extremely rare decision, the Catholic Church officially recognized the demonic possession of the 19 year-old college freshman. Told in flashbacks, The Exorcism of Emily Rose chronicles the haunting trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl who is believed to be possessed and the lawyer who takes on the task of defending himLawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) takes on the church and the state when she fights in defense of a priest, Father Richard Moore (Tom Wilkinson) who performed an exorcism on a young woman, Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter). Bruner must battle the state lawyer as well as her own loneliness, as she realizes that her career so far has not fulfilled her. She takes the case, albeit reluctantly, because she believes it will elevate her to senior partner at her law firm. The priest agrees to let her defend him only if he is allowed to tell Emily's story.
The trial begins with the calling of several medical experts by the prosecutor, Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott). One expert testifies that Emily was suffering from both epilepsy and psychosis. The defense contests that she may have actually been possessed, though Bruner is careful never to say that in so many words intially. Indeed Bruner explains that Emily was suffering from something that neither medicine nor psychology could explain, and that Father Moore as well as her family realized this and tried to help in another way. Several flashbacks show how this began. Alone in her dorm room one night, at 3:00 AM, she smells a strange burning smell from the hallway. When she checks on it, she sees the door open and shut by itself several times. When she goes back to her room, she sees a jar of pencils and pens move by itself. Additionally, her covers roll themselves down, and a great weight seems to press down on her, a force which also proceeds to choke her and seemingly to possess her momentarily. Through these episodes she wonders if they are really happening or if it is just a hallucination she is experiencing. She suffers more "visions", is hospitalized, and diagnosed with epilepsy. She is given anti-seizure medications which she claims do not work. Her visions continue, as do her severe bodily contortions.
She leaves school and returns to live with her parents. She and her parents become convinced she is not epileptic or mentally ill but is possessed by demons. They ask for their local parish priest to be called in to perform an exorcism, and the Church agrees. The prosecution counters that all this could be explained by a combination of epilepsy (the contortions) and psychosis (the visions).

The film takes place in 1348 in plague-ridden medieval England. After a strong first year, After Dark Horror Fest has been pretty hit or miss the last 2 years. Year 2 had a few standouts and some pretty bad films, and last year I only found one film that I considered enjoyable to the point of owning (which was Voices). Now in it's 4th year, ADHF caught me off guard because I had no idea these were on their way to DVD already. I knew nothing about them but decided to read some plots and jump right into the few that sounded semi-interesting. The first of which I got a chance to sample was The Final. The Final is the story of Dane, a high school boy who gets picked on regularly at school by the jocks and popular kids. As a matter of fact, Dane and all his "misfit" friends get routinely picked on to the point where they decide they cant take it anymore. Being avid fans of horror films, Dane and his friends take ideas from movies and come up with a plot to throw a fake party, drug everyone, and torture them all for picking on Dane and his friends. Their plan is not to kill them but to inflict pain and punishment on them so they will know what it's like to be "different." Theres not much more to the plot then that. They try and throw in some minor story points and shake things up at the end, but what it comes down to is a story all too eerily familiar in this day and age. Bully picks on boy. Boy buys guns to kill/hurt/scare bully. I understand that these situations have become all too unfortunately common in real life, but do we need a movie about it to hit on all the stereotypes of real life? The kids who get picked on are loners, have weird interests, dress funny(or in trench coats), or are of different ethnicity so others dont accept them and they cant take it and decide to kill their classmates. For me, it's just not all that necessary to make a film about this when we've come to an unfortunate time where we can turn on the news and see the same things. However, I did have low expectations going in because of this plot and must say I was somewhat entertainined. The problem is there is a great buildup after getting to know some of the "misfits" and seeing their struggles but ultimately the revenge is a let down. Seeing as their characters came up with ideas on how to get revenge from horror films, all the methods of torture/revenge are homages(or ripoffs) to other films. Nothing remotely original about it and they almost held back a little. I am not a huge fan of torture films, but if there is gonna be torture, make it worthwhile and not predictable and unoriginal. The acting was about what you would expect from a group of young actors playing angry teens, jocks, or the popular Mean Girls. Dialog was dumbed down to show their high school ages, with lines like "all is fair in sex & high school" being some of the cheesy lines throughout. All of the misfits had "costumes" they wore, some of which were interesting but all of which were unoriginal. A clown, a scarecrow, a nazi, a gas mask...etc. The FX on the torture were mediocre. Nothing stood out as very good and most were pretty simple and not nearly as realistic as one would think. All in all, with The Final you get what you'd expect. If you are looking for a revenge film in which high school "losers" decide to kill their tormentors for revenge, thats what this provides. But the story is underwhelming and the last half when things could of gotten truly ugly they back of and seem to hold back. For my money, I'd rather just watch the torture scenes from films they pay homage to because those films are far better. But i guess there are worse ways of could of spent these 90 minutes than watching The Final.
